Most plants treat the mounting room as a cost center to ignore. Press time is measured to the second. Mounting time is measured by vibe. The result is a department quietly bleeding money in ways your ERP cannot see.
If you recognize three or more of the symptoms below, your mounting room is costing you more than you think.
1. Sleeves stored on the floor
Floor staging is the single biggest red flag. Every sleeve on the floor represents an opportunity for damage, a tripping hazard, and a search-time multiplier. We have walked into plants with $40,000 of inventory leaning against a wall.
2. Operators who can't find what they need
If your mounters spend more than 5 minutes per changeover hunting for a sleeve, plate, or anilox roller, your storage system is broken. Multiply that across shifts, days, and presses — the number gets ugly fast.
3. Damaged sleeves nobody talks about
Ask your prepress team how many sleeves they wrote off last quarter. If they don't know, that's the answer. Damage is the most expensive line item nobody tracks.
4. Different shifts mount differently
When first shift and third shift have different procedures, your changeover variance climbs and your quality drops. Standardization is impossible without the right physical environment.
5. The mounting room hasn't changed in 10 years
Presses get faster. Substrates get harder. Inventory grows. If your storage racks are the same ones your grandfather installed, you are running a 2025 plant on 1995 infrastructure.
What to do about it
Start with measurement. Walk the floor with a stopwatch. Count damaged sleeves for one week. Time three changeovers and ask where the friction is. The numbers will make the case for you.
