Mobile shelving systems run on floor tracks. The tracks come in two main flavors: ADA-compliant surface tracks and fully recessed tracks. The difference matters more than people realize.

ADA-compliant surface tracks

These sit on top of the existing floor. They are low-profile (typically under half an inch), with chamfered edges that meet ADA accessibility requirements for cart and pallet jack passage. Installation is straightforward — no floor cutting, no concrete work, minimal site disruption.

This is the right choice for most installations. It is faster, cheaper, and still allows full mobility for ground equipment.

Recessed tracks

Recessed tracks are cut into the floor so the track sits flush with the surrounding concrete. The result is a perfectly smooth floor with no profile changes. Aesthetically and operationally, this is the cleanest possible installation.

The trade-offs are install cost, install time, and the requirement for specialized concrete cutting and finishing work. For new construction or facility renovations, recessed is often the right call. For retrofits in active facilities, the disruption usually outweighs the benefit.

What to consider

  • Floor traffic: If you have heavy pallet jack or fork truck traffic across the storage area, recessed reduces wear and bumps.
  • Install timing: If you cannot afford the downtime for floor cutting, surface tracks are the only option.
  • Budget: Surface tracks are typically 30–50% cheaper installed.
  • Future flexibility: Surface tracks can be removed and relocated if your layout changes. Recessed tracks are permanent.

The honest recommendation

Default to ADA-compliant surface tracks unless you have a specific reason to choose recessed. The surface option is excellent in nearly every operational scenario.
